Buckfast Abbey expands hospitality offering with launch of new Pizzeria, San Benedetto’s

February 8, 2023 | News

South Devon’s Buckfast Abbey has today announced that a brand-new, on-site pizzeria restaurant, San Benedetto’s, will soon open to the public on National Pizza Day, Thursday 9th February.

With a tasty selection of quick and easy Italian meals on offer, both to eat-in and take-away, the new restaurant will provide Buckfast Abbey’s 250,000+ annual visitors, and the local Buckfastleigh community, with a wider choice of dining options to enjoy – right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.

Featuring many Italian favourites, such as pizzas, cured meats and wild gelatos on the menu, the new pizzeria expands the Abbey’s existing hospitality facilities, which up until now have been delivered by the popular Grange Restaurant and its choice of delicious lunches, lighter bites, cake and cream teas, as well as the mouth-watering meals available in the on-site restaurant in the Northgate House Hotel.

With the launch of San Benedetto’s, visitors can now look forward to even greater choice and dining availability, with both new and traditional selection of Italian pizzas to choose from such as: Margherita, Pepperoni, Carne Festa, Frutti di mare, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Vegetariano and Hawaiana.

To accompany the pizzas, the restaurant also offers a variety small plates and side dishes, such as Antipasto Misto, Garlic and mozzarella flat breads. And for the sweet tooths, there’s even a selection of wild gelato desserts in Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate and Salted Caramel – flavours to savour afterwards.

Commenting on the launch of the new restaurant, Fr Abbot David Charlesworth said: “As a home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine Monks, hospitality has always been central to life here at Buckfast Abbey.

“It’s a real pleasure to enhance our hospitality offering further with the exciting launch of a new pizzeria, which has been aptly named San Benedetto’s – the Italian translation of St Benedict.

“With capacity to cater for up to 40 covers, we look forward to welcoming more visitors to the Abbey this year to enjoy a delectable variety of food and drink.”

The new pizzeria will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm to 10pm (with last food orders at 9pm), and again on Saturdays from 12pm to 10pm (with last food orders at 9pm). Takeaways will become available from Thursday 16th February onwards.

Buckfast Abbey is conveniently located midway between Exeter and Plymouth, just off the A38. Home to a community of Benedictine monks, the Abbey offers a unique, tranquil ambience, and is open seven days a week to the public. For more information on Buckfast Abbey visit https://www.buckfast.org.uk.
