Surprising twist to Visit South Devon competition

Rebecca Jones, the delighted winner of the latest Visit South Devon social media competition, was in for an extra surprise and an uncanny case of coincidence when she came to collect her prize from award winning Teignmouth artist Laura Wall who, it turns out, lived not only in the same Welsh seafront student house as Rebecca, but in the very same room, just eight years apart.
The surprising discovery emerged when Rebecca Jones of Ideford arrived at Laura Wall’s gallery to collect her limited edition ‘Golden Days of Summer’ print.  While there the two realised that both Laura and Rebecca had gone to Aberystwyth University where Laura penned her enchanting children’s book ‘Goose’, now sold in 40 countries around the globe.  Spookier still, they discovered that both had lived in the very same room.
The revelation took Laura, Rebecca and Visit South Devon by surprise as Rebecca was one of almost 7,000 people to have entered competitions on Visit South Devon’s social media channels over the summer.
Commenting on the quirky coincidence, Laura Wall said: “It’s strange to think that of all the people that entered the Visit South Devon competition, the winner should turn out to be someone that not only lived in the same house as me but in the very same room.  The pair of us couldn’t believe it!”
Rebecca added: “I was totally flabbergasted!  When I met Laura I mentioned that I’d admired one of her pictures of Aberystwyth as it showed the house and the room that I lived in as a student.  That’s when Laura revealed that it was her house and her room too!  I felt lucky to win the competition anyway, but to have a direct link to Laura was totally unexpected.  I’ve already got one of her pictures in the hallway and there’s the perfect space for this print on the landing in my new house.  All I need to do now is to buy a copy of her Aberystwyth picture and my mini collection will be complete.”
Stephanie Cherrett, General Manager at Visit South Devon, commented: “We get thousands of entrants to our Facebook and Twitter competitions every year, many of whom come from across the globe.  In the last year alone our social media fans have increased by 20% while Twitter followers have grown by 35%, and that makes winning a competition increasingly hard.  The odds of winning are already pretty small, but the chances of picking a winner who went to the same university in Wales, who lived in the same house, and in the same room must be in the millions to one.  You probably stand a better chance of winning the lottery!”
Laura Wall, who donated the limited edition ‘Golden Days of Summer’ print as a prize for Visit South Devon, sells a selection of original paintings and prints at her gallery in Teignmouth: Laura Wall Art and Illustration, George Street, Teignmouth, TQ14 8AH. Here you can buy Laura’s Goose series of children’s stories as well as accessories such as printed cards and lamps with her pictures printed on the lampshades.  Her website www.laurawall.com showcases many of Laura’s paintings and carries details of commissions that she undertakes as well as information on galleries throughout the Westcountry and Wales where her prints can be bought.
