Lighting control system designer and manufacturer Prolojik has supplied an open protocol system to a major new commercial building in central London, 40 Chancery Lane.
Prolojik’s involvement included both shell, core and client fit-out of the 97,600 sq ft new build office development, now taken by media company Publicis Groupe. It completed in autumn 2016 and features Prolojik’s Networked DALI lighting control solution, which provides full control and emergency monitoring of the building’s efficiently designed lighting installation.
Specified by M&E consulting engineers at professional services firm Arup, Prolojik’s Networked DALI system was selected because of its open protocol design, allowing any in-house engineer or third party contractor may access, maintain and adapt the system in the future, allowing complete flexibility for the client. It is also highly resource-efficient to use open protocol technology when integrating multiple control products, offering speed of installation and scalability throughout all levels within a building’s architecture for highly sophisticated controls integration and data export.
The high specification product and fit-out design were tailored to the specific requirements of the building by Prolojik’s in-house engineers in conjunction with independent building consultancy MHBC, with the fit-out facilitated by international construction services company ISG Fit-Out. Prolojik was chosen due to the compact design of the equipment, ensuring the electrical risers didn’t become too tight for other equipment needed.
The project also integrated emergency monitoring and testing within the lighting control system, rather than having a separate system, as Prolojik’s commercial director Mark Vincent explains: “There was no need to install a secondary system to facilitate emergency lighting when the intelligence already sits within the luminaire and the lighting control system.
“Industry standard DALI invertors are commonplace within emergency fixtures, but when coupled with our open protocol system, we’re able to provide the client with all the feedback required via our PERSPECTIVE software, which allows the client to initiate the statutory emergency test at a time that suits the occupiers, identifying any issues and works required. This makes things more cost effective, simpler to manage and streamlined for the client, without compromising on functionality.”
Developed by Derwent London, one of London’s most innovative office specialist property regenerators and investors, the office space at 40 Chancery Lane was pre-let to Publicis Groupe in June 2013. The building was designed by architects Bennetts Associates and provides eight floors of high quality offices, a new retail unit and a publicly accessible passageway to a new landscaped courtyard that brings daylight to the new office floors.
